Alan III "the Black", Earl of Richmond
AKA: Alan de Bretagne
AKA: Alan de Bretagne

TITLES: Succeeded father as a count of Brittany, about 1136.
TITLES: No creation of the Earldom of Richmond has been found, but Alan occurs in a royal charter of 1136 as "comes Richemundie"...... from 1136 onwards he was recognised as Earl of Richmond, and as Count Stephen his father is never styled either "comes Richemundie" or "comes Anglie," one seems justified in regarding Alan as the first Earl and in placing the creation or assumption shortly after his father's death, and in 1136 - see 'The Complete Peerage', vol. 10 p. 788 fn. b.

TITLES: In 1140, King Stephen deprived Reynold de Dunstanville, illegitimate son of Henry I, of his lands in Cornwall and gave the county (patrium) to Alan, who seems to have had some claim to it as heir of his uncle Brian; he thereupon became, or assumed the style of, Earl of Cornwall.
