INVESTIGATE: Identity> Parentage to Adelheid (Adelais) is not sure. This theory (Giselbert Duke of Burgundy) was made from early research which has come under criticism and may not be correct. Settipani has suggested that she was the daughter of Hughes Count of Burgundy and Willa of Thurgau. Schaume indicates that she was the daughter or granddaughter of Charles Constantin Count of Vienne. Bouchart sets out several theories but in the end leaves her parentage unknown. Duchesne indicates that she was the daughter of Robert Count of Meux and Troyes. Patrons should not use this information in their individual files until additional research can identify the correct lineage.

Schwennicke vol 3 part 1 table 116 " Adelaide (de Vergy) Widdow of Robert Count of Méaux and Troyes (Vermandois-Karolinger) and of Lambert the Count of Chalon-sur Saône; the daughter of Giselbert Duke of Burgundy (see Buviniden)." The name for Adelheid here (de Vergy) is not sure. Her identity has been the subject of much speculation and has been confused with her daughter of the same name, supposedly marrying the same spouses.

If Adelais was the mother of all of Comte Lambert's children, she could not have been born later than [930/32]. This is early for her also to have given birth to her son by her second marriage after 978. The date would of course be later if Adelaide was Comte Lambert's second wife, as suggested above. The origin of Adelais has been the subject of much speculation. Settipani has suggested that she was the daughter of Hugues Comte en Bourgogne and his wife Willa von Thurgau. Chaume suggested that Adelais was the daughter or granddaughter of Charles Constantin Comte de Vienne. Bouchard sets out several different theories concerning Adelais's origin, with the aim mainly of explaining Lambert's accession to Chalon by inheritance through his wife. However, none appears to be based on any primary documentation and the author concludes that she prefers "to leave Adelais's origins unknown". An earlier theory was that Adelais was the sister of "Wera" Ctss de Meaux which would mean that she was Adelais, daughter of Giselbert Duke of Burgundy & his wife Ermengardis [de Dijon]. Duchesne suggested that she was the daughter of Robert Comte de Meaux et de Troyes, although this would mean that the two wives of Geoffroy I Comte d'Anjou were sisters, no mention of which has so far been found in contemporary sources. Another suggestion is that Adelais Ctss de Chalon was the same person as Wera-Adelais Ctss de Meaux. However, this is even more unlikely chronologically considering the estimated birth date of Wera-Adelais and the fact that Adelais de Chalon gave birth to at least one child by her second husband, Geoffroy Comte d'Anjou, after her marriage in 979. It would also mean that Comte Geoffroy married, as his second wife, his first wife's mother which is unlikely. In 1619, Duchesne suggested that Adelais was the sister of Guillaume I Comte d'Arles. Adelais married secondly (2 or 9 Mar 979) as his second wife, Geoffroi I "Grisegonelle" Comte d'Anjou who acted as Comte de Chalon until his death in 987. Comte Lambert & his [first] wife (who may be fictional and whose name is unknown) had [one possible child]:" Gerberge. We have elected not to put a second spouse in for Lambert until further research can identify such an individual does exist.

INVESTIGATE: Kinship: Settipani in, "La Préhistoire Des Capétiens", page 233 states that it is generally accepted that Adela is the sister of Rodbert not his daughter.

INVESTIGATE: Anselme says that Adele d'Anjou, called Blanche, who married William I of Arles father of Constance was the sister of Foulques III [the Black]. Her father was Geoffroy I Grisegonelle brother of Adelaide daughter of Foulques II who married Etienne de Gevaudun (Brioude). Cawley "Medieval Lands" says Adelaide later married Raymond of Toulouse, Louis king of the Franks, Guillaume II "le Liberateur" and fifthly Othon Guillaume Comte de Mâcon.
