Devon & Cornwall Notes & Queries, vol. 24 p. 9, states:
"Sir William Pole states that before his childless death the last Sir John of the senior line at Berry Pomeroy conveyed Berry to Sir Thomas Pomeroy, son of Robert, and the Visitations say that after the death of Sir Thomas, Berry reverted to Edward Pomeroy, son of Thomas, fourth son of Henry Pomeroy by Joan de Moelys, the grandfather of the last Sir John of Berry."
"Now to start with the only Sir Thomas, son of Robert, given in the pedigree was Sir Thomas, son of Robert of Sandridge, son of Thomas who acquired Sandridge, being fourth son of Henry and Joan (de Moelys). The dates of Henry, elder brother of this Thomas are 1308-1373, which is a full century before the dates of Edward, 1404-1446, so how could Edward possibly be nephew of this Henry?"
"The Visitations have been misled by the fact that Sir Thomas married as her third husband Joan Chudleigh by whom he was childless, but it never seems to have occurred to them that Sir Thomas could have had another wife, by whom he was father of Edward, as he must have been, seeing that Sandridge which had come to him from his father and his grandfather, passed after him to Edward and his descendants, and if Edward had not been Sir Thomas's son, Edward is left up in the air with no father at all. It is perfectly true that Edward inherited Berry from Sir Thomas and Sir Thomas acquired it by gift of the last Sir John of Berry, but the descent of Berry has nothing to do with the descent of Sandridge, for these properties were in different lines of Pomeroy for the two preceding generations."
