King William [William the Conqueror] gave him properties subsequently identified as the Honour of Peverel, consisting of 100 lordships in the counties of Nottingham and Northampton, 14 in Derby, some 20 in Berkshire, Leicestershire, Oxford, Bedford, Buckingham and Essex.
