NOTE: Of German descent. He understood Greek and spoke Latin. He continued the Frankish policy of expansion to include all of the German tribes (with the exception of Scandinavia and Briton). He had a close relation with the Christian Church. His reign and policies established the beginnings of papal power. In the year 781 the Pope crowned Charlemagne's son Pepin King of Italy, and his other son Ludwig (Louis) King of Aquitaine. On Dec. 25, 800 Charlemagne was crowned Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire at St. Peters, Rome, Italy.

Upon the death of his brother Karlomann (4 Dec. 771) he became King of the Franks. Prior to that, the kingdom was divided between the two brothers. He was married to the daughter of Desiderius King of the Lombards (774/5), whom he divorced before he went to Italy where he conquered Pavia, Spoleto and Beneveto and assumed the crown of the Lombards. He then established his rule in Venetia, Isteria, Dalmatia, Corsica and Bavaria. Saxony was not conquered until after a bitter 30 year struggle

In 795/6. the Avars on the lower Danube were conquered. Barcelona was taken in 801. A new division of government called Margraves (over several Grafs) was established to govern the various parts of the kingdom. He ruled as Emperor for 14 years and died in Aachen Jan 28, 814.
