RESEARCH: It has been very difficult to determine the order of marriage of King Harald, so many of the sources disagree not only in the order of marriage, but also in many of the time elements. The above order has been adopted because it is generally conceded Asa and Gyda were the first two wives. Ragnhild is supposed to have been married shortly after the victory in Havsfjord, which ranges from 868 to after 890 in various histories. The later period in recent years has become more acceptable. To accept therefore Ragnhild, Svanhild, Ashild and Snefrid as wives no. 3, 4, 5 and 6 respectively brings the remaining dates, though of necessity approximated in accordance with events, into closer harmony. Also the story of King Harald and Snefrid would make it more likely that she is the last of those mentioned above. In addition to the slave girl (by conquest -not by birth) Thora, King Harald must have had many wives or concubines and children whose names are unknown. It is known Thora was his concubine in his old age, therefore, she is listed last.

IDENTITY: Corresponds with Athelstan, King of Wessex. However the sagas give him improbable longevity and an improbable number of children. He called all his sons "kings" and his daughters "jarls". [Cawley, Medieval Lands.]
