The King proceeded to the Isle of Wight and drove him and his family into exile. He took refuge at the Court of Anjou. A short time later he conducted a successful raid into Normandy. About Lent 1138 he was taken prisoner in Normandy by Enguerrand de Say; He returned to England in autumn 1139, shortly before the arrival of the Empress Maud, and seized the castle of Corfe, which he successfully defended against the King, forcing him eventually to raise the siege.
