CHURCH: Property> Restored to the Abbey of Montebourg some lands of which it had been deprived, and made fresh grants - he was therefore esteemed the founder; actually the said Abbey was founded by William the Conqueror - see 'The Complete Peerage', vol. 4 p. 310-311, 311 fn. a. TITLES: Clarification> It has been erroneously considered that he was created Earl of Devon by Henry I. The authorities for this are the statements made in two monastic chronicles. There is abundant charter evidence that he never styled himself an Earl, that his wife in her widowhood never styled herself a Countess, and that none of their children, nor their grandchildren, ever so styled them - see 'The Complete Peerage', vol. 4 p. 309, 310 fn. c.
